web authentication - Mac Networking

Where might I find any doentation on how to get mod_auth_apple working on Apache 1.3.29? this module is not even listed at http://modules.apache.org/ (so much for Apple's open source....) also tight-lipped is http://developer.apple.com/ The Panther Server Docs: Web Technologies Administration has one terse para: mod_auth_apple This module allows a website to authenticate users by looking for them in directory service domains within the server¹s search policy. When authentication is enabled, website visitors are prompted for a user name and password before they can access information on the site. ummm, sorry, not here it doesn't :-(...

I have the Server version, but I have seen a confession to EULA
violation from someone who took it out of the Server to put on a client,
and there are claims that it can be compiled from the Darwin source, but
I don't see it in there...

My problem is it doesn't seem to be working according to label,
is it me, or the product?

Thanks, that has to be the best description yet.
My Googling didn't reach it :-(
Neither did my search thru the front pages of Apple's Developer site
    find those source files.
I'm still unsure whether this uses the Apple UAM.

My colleagues are trying to convince me I should use mod_auth_LDAP, but
given most of the LDAP servers around here are NT or Exchange, and we
have seen spectacular domain wide freezes when one (all too frequently)
    chokes...
