web link question
Is there a way to create web links in Acrobat Professional so they open the URL in the default browser? I can only seem to get it to work as a 'webcapture' feature, opening directly in Acrobat, which is not what I wanted to do. I wanted to be able to link a couple of URLs to my document but using the end user's browser, thinking this would be ultimately less confusing for them.

Re: web link question
Sure, you can do this. Did you inadvertently check the "don't show this dialog again" when you were prompted to open the link in Acrobat or in your browser?

PDF's won't open in the browser if the computer is running OSX.

Re: web link question
Who said anything about opening PDFs in a browser?
When you click on a link in a PDF, you have the option of opening the url in a browser, or having the link converted to a PDF.

Re: web link question
OK, I found the option you mentioned, which I had not touched at all - I guess it installs set up that way in Acrobat Professional as a default Preference.
That said, this seems to be a part of the Applications Preferences, not the Document Preferences/Properties. This seems risky if I am sharing PDFs with others, as I will not be able to predict the performance of the link. Possibly Acrobat Reader would be a lot less flexible with this feature and only open in the default browser?
When sending my PDFs to others, is there a way to prompt a link to open in the default browser and override any default Preference settings? That way I can predict the performance of said link and feel confident that I am creating something that will perform a certain way. If not, I am reluctant to use this feature.
thanks for any input... now I am at least half way there.

The default is that you are prompted to open in Acrobat or a browser, with the option to not show that dialog again, and whatever you select becomes the default.

Maybe with a document level javascript, but I'm not certain about that. You might have to check out the Acrobat JavaScript guide.

Re: web link question
Consider also firewalls that are configured to not allow Acrobat to access the internet. I have found that in our office nothing happens when you click a web link - unless you enable Acrobat via the firewall.

Re: web link question
OK, I just downloaded Acrobat READER 6.02 and looked at the preferences available - there is NO web capture feature that you can set in this application. You cannot choose to open links in either Acrobat or your Browser, which is good news for me.
This means that I think the link set in Acrobat Professional will open however I set it to, as long as the end user is not using Acrobat Standard or Professional with web capture set to open in Acrobat instead of in a browser.
Does this sound correct? Gosh, I hope so, as it has just lopped off 90% of the internet population who could screw up my nice little documents. Nice going Adobe.

It can sometimes seem a bit of a rip-off ... but when deploying data to
users with a free application it is worth investigating the cavaets

That sounds correct. But as Gary pointed out, if a firewall blocks access, the links won't do anything.

Actually I think you missed my point - I LIKE the fact that you cannot fool with it in Acrobat Reader. I spent good money on Acrobat Professional so that I can create PDFs that you just cannot do with the OSX print to PDF features and I was afraid that this link feature was a pointless venture unless you knew the end user's system.
I just had to download Acrobat Reader to make sure....

Point noted... I will have to risk that one. Can't have everything can I?
Thanks for the tip however.
