    Default Weird Missing Fonts message

I have converted a document from QuarkXPress 3 (4 didn't work so I had to go back to 3!) to InDesign 2 (no CS as yet) and a strange problem has developed on opening the file.

InDesign claims that 'Frutiger Italic' is missing when there are no true instances of such a font in the file. 'Frutiger Roman' was also listed as missing at first but somehow I got rid of that. I am adding and restyling Myriad MM text from the previous edition of the book as I go.

I know that such incorrectly named fonts can occur when somehow the correct font family name gets associated with the incorrect weight for that family. This is not the case with this 'font'. The first instances are the page numbers on two master pages, despite me having deleted the text boxes and reinstated Frutiger 65 Bold for the numbers. If I go on with the search whole slabs of correctly styled text are highlighted as 'Frutiger Italic' when they are 45 Light, 65 Bold and so on.

I presume that the message is merely an annoyance since all pages are displaying and printing properly and it will become irrelevant when I produce the prepress PDF. But any suggestions on getting rid of this pest at this stage would be greatly appreciated.

I'm wondering if someone formatted the fonts using the ctrl+b for bold
instead of choosing the right font.

well _I_ do :-) And then I get the wrong font since the base font for most
documents I create is Minion (-Pro) and I prefer to have the Semi-bold font
instead... AFAIK this cannot be changed using the Keyboard Prefs[?]

    No use of ctrl+b, Bob.

And I don't think the conversion from QuarkXPress is a factor either, since this message began to appear well after the revised layout began.

I have been pasting in Myriad and Myriad MM text from the previous edition and have been overriding the old styles when applying the new styles. There is some bold and italic emphasis within paragraphs and I have been applying this with character styles, which are correctly created as 46 Light Italic and 65 Bold. No Myriad text remains.

This nonsense font InDesign is calling 'Frutiger Italic' is an absolute mystery. It just doesn't exist in the file. If there was a piece of text incorrectly tagged as Frutiger plus the incorrect weight, surely it should be locatable and correctable. (I have encountered and fixed this type of thing before.) Whole slabs of correctly styled text, some not even italic, shouldn't be identified as 'Frutiger Italic'. InDesign does seem to have got its font identification well and truly messed up.

FWIW, I've seen this type of thing on docs I converted from 2.0 to CS.
For some reason, CS sees some of the fonts with different names. I fix
it when I open them, but after that they're fine.

I have just got a 'missing' message in another publication but it was easily fixed. An author had emboldened Wingdings. While ID2 couldn't find it, I found it myself (an arrow). I removed the faux bold and the message disppeared.

This is what's supposed to happen. In the case I raised, however, there simply isn't a faux font involved. Nowhere is there a 'Frutiger Italic'. Frustrating.
