Default Weird PDFs from Illustrator with OpenType fonts

(I can't believe how many problems I'm having with OpenType fonts all of a sudden.)

I'm running OS 9.2.2 on a 400 Mhz PowerMac G4 with 812 Mb RAM, but this problem also shows up with my colleages, who are running a variety of different Macs with different memory configurations (but all on OS 9.2.2).

This problem happens when I make PDFs from Illustrator 10.0.3 files containing text set in Myriad Pro and its variations. It happens when I save the files directly from Illustrator, or when I import EPSs into Quark and make a PDF that way.

Whenever I have certain characters in the text (including, but not limited to, the tab character, opening and closing quote marks, apostrophes and em-dashes, they're replaced in the PDF by a character that looks like a box with an "X" through it.

I would prefer not to convert the type to outlines, as it's harder for the recipients to read on screen, and it makes the file size much larger.

(As an afterthought, is there any difference in the character shapes between Myriad Pro [OTF] and regular Myriad [PostScript]? That might take care of some of the problems if I just use regular Myriad--I've been using Myriad Pro because the client's branding standards specify it.)

    Thanks!

I don't believe that QXP supports OTF fonts but I can't check this, and could well be wrong, because I no longer use QXP.
