    Default Weird Text

Every once in a while my text just changes. It happens when I zoom in and out.I just close/open indesign and it stops for a while but it pops back up. Here is a screenshot close up of what the text changes to.

    Indesign CS 3.0.1
    Windows XP
    Xeon 3.06ghz
    2GB of Ram
    Quadro FX 3000
    140 GB HD

I've noticed it happens when other programs are open. I'm trying to narrow it down to see if its actually being caused by one of them. Usually I just have Indesign and photoshop open but I sometimes run PS, Indesign, Illustrator, Freehand and Word. Thanks for any help.

It seems that there is added 1 to each char. I mean that is the following
letter that is shown in the right picture.
    I do not know why.

Very weird indeed. And in case you didn't notice, it's not random.
Everything is off by one letter.

You might have some kind of font problem or even a very strange video
problem. While it's a real long shot, try turning hardware acceleration
down to zero and see if that helps. If so, you have a video driver problem.

Try changing fonts to see if it's a bad font.

Ok Tried setting the hardware accel to off. and I still have issues. I know its not a font problem now because it happened in a different file where the font above was not used.

I'm wondering, could this be a hyper-threading issue? I'm also experiencing some other anomalies (super slow redraw and failing to redraw all together)

I just shut off hyper-threading and will spend the next few days keepign an eye on it. Thanks for your help Robert.

Try trashing your prefs, also. Couldn't hurt.

Yea I forgot to mention these were brand new systems and these programs have only been installed for about 2 weeks so far. I did however delete the preferences because as you said it couldnt hurt. Plus its an easy way to eliminate something from the equation.

Right now as it stands the Hyper-threading SEEMS to be a fix. I'm not going to officially say it is because thats about the time the problem reappears! You know its like a Theory, you can never prove a theory but you can sure as hell disprove it. :)

    Thanks again for your help.

I had some issues on my new Dell with hyperthreading. I turned off
hyperthreading and they disappeared, never to return. Some have claimed
that hyperthreading *cannot* be the cause of these sorts of problems.
    Who knows?

Well I'm going to agree with you. This computer is a new (3 week old) Dell Precision 650. Ironic? Since I've turned off Hyperthreading my problems have not returned either. I've also turned off HT for the other computers in my dept. (total of 6) 2 of those computers we're having text issues in Indesign and neither of them are having those problems anymore.

I'm still researching and trying to find pros and cons of HT but I havent found much. So far it seems to be a flawless and much adored system quality. In reality however (I guess as far as you and I are concerned) this doesnt seem to be the case.

I would love to find out that this isnt the problem. (despite the fact that my issue has not returned) Simply because I would like to take advantage of the benefits of Hyperthreading.

Is there any official Adobe stance on HT?

I think that the potential benefits are marginal anyway, so I'm not
particularly concerned with turning it off.
