Default "Weld" command in "Corel Draw"

    Hi there:
I'm new to Illustrator but have used Corel Draw in the past. In Corel Draw there was a "Weld" command. What this did was create a drawing that was the basically the trace of the perimeter lines of a group of objects that intersected (or overlapped) each other thereby creating an outline of the whole object without any internal lines. I was wondering if Illustrator has any feature that would emulate this? I have searched the knowledge base before posting this thread.
In case I need a work-around for this; the reason I liked this feature was that when I wanted to create a drop shadow effect around the perimeter of the drawing it was easy to make a "weld" copy and send it to the back with a drop shadow.

You'll find those commands in the Pathfinder palette. I believe the one you want is Unite, the top left icon.
