What are the benefits of Freehand?

I use Fireworks extensively, though sometimes I need more firepower... I used
to use PSP and have considered purchasing *gulp* Photoshop...

If Freehand will do the trick than I'd rather save the truckload of dollars.
However, I have not found any good books or clarification on Freehand.

I must admit I am a rather lame graphics person and would like to improve (or
I may very well starve...)

I was hoping that some of you that actually know what they are doing could
lend me your opinion.

Incidentally, are any of you looking for work? I can afford what amounts to
slave wages, but hopefully that will improve with time...

Photoshop and Fireworks are both (for the most part) bitmap applications.
Freehand is vector. PS and FW are both graphic manipulation (gif,jpeg etc)
packages. Freehand is a graphic creation (drawing) package. I have both PS
and FW and find both have their place, but the vector graphics of Freehand
makes it a different tool entirely.

To add to Carlo's comments...Adobe Illustrator competes with Freehand. Both
are vector design programs. I have them both and the more seasoned designers
in this forum can comment better than I can when it comes to their advantages
and disadvantages.

Begin by explaining the task before you. Just what is it you wish to do. If
you have a 'picture' you wish to manipulate, that is one thing. If you have an
idea you wish to 'create' that is another. Bitmap graphics and vector graphics
(Photoshop and Illustrator OR Fireworks and Freehand) have entirely different
reasons to exist. Tell the forum your challenge and the 'great ones' will help
you out. After all, it is always best to, uh, begin at the beginning.

I've found a graphics tablet to be a great investment. Not just in its
flexibility and precision but also in helping stave off wrist problems.

What is it that you want to achieve.
I have been using freehand and photoshop extensively for quite sometime.
