Dee, select all, then check document info, and scroll to embedded images.

"if you place a 300 ppi image, and then choose to embed it, it stays at 300 ppi."

If you resize the image in your AI file, will it automatically resample the data, as it would in Photoshop? For instance, you place a file that was originally 300 ppi at 5"x7". In AI you reduce the image to 2"x3". Is it now 300 ppi at 2"x3"? If so, then if you resize it up again you've lost all that data, so it wouldn't bear any relation to the original file any more. I haven't been able to find out if AI works in this way, though.

No it resizes without resampling, ergo changing the resolution.

The confusing thing about placing embedded rasters is that usually Illy imports the pixels at 72ppi and immediately transforms them to be the resolution set in the Photoshop file (except for PS.eps files I think).

So a 300ppi image shows a 24% transform in the links palette the moment you place it at "same size".

All of this info is in the document info palette when you have an image selected, from color depth, to H and V pixels... etc.

Thank you, John Slate, I finally found info.

But, it states the resolution at 800 instead of 1200 which was the original PS scan.

This is because it is scaled down in AI?

    Scaled up I mean.

Yes. If you have a 1-inch square image at 1200 ppi, it is 1200 pixels by 1200 pixels. Embed in in an Illustrator file and it's still 1 inch, 1200 by 1200 pixels. Enlarge it 150%, and it becomes 1.5 inches square, but the res drops to 800 ppi - becasue it has not been resampled (1200/1.5 = 800). The pixel dimensions of the image itself remain 1200 by 1200.

    Thank you Gary.

This could help me in some files. I'm still afraid there's no fix for people who scan in low res and then "cheat" by upping the res from the Image Size in Photoshop, is there?

    'Fraid not.
