It allows you to use the fantastic graphical elements you have designed
in Photoshop and to combine them with the elaborate and truly fantastic
text components and then send the file to a professional printer for
prepress, or to create a PDF file for use on CDs or the web. That, and
much much more.
ID is a Desk Top Publishing application. It is similar to Quark and> what exactly does it do ?
pagemaker, and if you have to ask what they are, then chances are you
don't need any of them.

Hey Carl,
The question wasn't what is InDesign. It was what are the advantages of
using it with Photoshop. Read the question better next time.

Re: what Indesign does for PS?
The big one is direct support for Photoshop PSD files with transparencies.
No other desktop publishing program does that
Wrong very wrong, try Corel.

I read the question right the first time. He asked "what exactly does
it do?" which lead me to believe he was askign what exactly ID did
assuming that if he has PS he has a clue as to what exactly PS does. I
told him what ID did and how they would be used together. Sorry if my
answer didn't meet your high standards of excellence.

CorelDraw? I don't think most people would consider that a DTP
application as much as a vector design app. It certainly lacks many
basic features that would be required in a DTP app, although it is no
slouch. And you are right, it does now support PSD.

I would Vio, and it is, its multi page, and full of printing settings, tell me one feature that it lacks, have you ever used Corel Vio.

Re: what Indesign does for PS?
Vio I have used Indesgin aswell, I have never said Indesign and Corel are the same, your puting words in my mouth, What I did say is Corel is a DTP package, and I have done 200 page catalogs with many images in, and it rips, or makes printer files and PDF's as any other DTP package would. Indesign is more stable, im not disagreeing with that. On some occasions if its mainly text I will use PageMaker, but I dont do that kinda stuff any more.

Re: what Indesign does for PS?
TDO, Corel is a company, not a program. Are you referring to Corel Ventura
the layout program, or Corel Draw, the drawing program?

Re: what Indesign does for PS?
Jay: CorelDraw, but Draw has many fine attributes that make it far superior to Illustrator. As for DTP, it does have limitations but not for smaller jobs (64 pages or less). Past that, Ventura is the way to go but unfortunately Corel (the company) has no worthy marketing skill so Ventura got lost in the shuffle of DTPPs. Ventura is a great package.

Re: what Indesign does for PS?
I have an extreme dislike of books/magazines done in drawing programs,
although this has mainly come from having to try to fix books done in
freehand.
I find it is easier to re-layout the book in PM/QXP/ID than to try and fix
said books.
As for Cd I have v8, but only use it to fix/ convert ads to eps, and this
only happens maybe 3 times a year. As for Ventura I have always wanted to
try it, but have never gotten around to it. Do they have a downloadable demo
yet?

Too bad I can't get CD11 to work, and Corel cannot help me, either. I
have reluctantly switched to AI10 exclusively because of CD's inability
to handle DXF's created on ACAD2002 without locking up totally or crashing.
