    shame? why? why should adobe let competitors get a free glance at the product before it's out the door. that's what NDA's are for!;

    I mentioned that post with the thought 'the competitors are playing catch up with the current version'; hence newer features were not a problem...

    anyway....suppose thats the reason....

    It's been so nice that Adobe hasn't fallen for the new product version schemes: year, or two letter tag. Now, with moniker "CS" (Photoshop Computer Science Edition?), the upgrade path gets very fuzzy. In the case of that Redmond company, they can sell seasonal upgrades, without concern that the new boxes contain any changes over the old ones.

    Version numbers have worked since the '70s. Why change?

    The only thing I can think of in regards to changing how versions are represented is this: can you imagine seeing Windows ver 23.5? Or Photoshop 23.0.1?

    I'm not saying it'd be a bad thing per se, but some marketing folks might.

    It'll still have the real version number underneath, the same way that Redmond company's products do. Emacs is up to the high-20s, and it... oh, wait, bad example, Emacs has been in beta for fifteen years.

    It's a shame to see them change from a straightforward method, to a fad scheme, which will make later upgrades confusing for users.

    And Illustrator is in double digits, so... I know it's done, I was just offering up a potential reason to the naming change.
