What's the dif between a indd file and a inx file? - Adobe Indesign Windows

Hi everyone, I know that there is now a plug-in for InDesign CS that will allow InDesign CS to open INX files created in InDesign CS2. But what exactly is an inx file and how do i make it in Indesign CS2? Does the backwards compatibility not work with .indd files? Thanks, J....

..indd files are backwards compatible only via inx. But inx can also be used to solve all sorts of problems. If you have a indd file from version 2 or 3 which keeps nagging you about plugins that aren't installed on your current system, export to inx and import back and the nagging stops.

Something else I fixed via inx was a number of files created in ID2 that contained a link to a tagged text file that I had placed. I don't have those files anymore and ID kept whining about those files. When you export an ID file to inx it is written as an XML file, which is plain text. I loaded the inx file in a text editor and stripped the references to the placed files, then imported the file ID4. Problem solved.

All formatting is retained when you export to inx and import. Well, ideally. You may need to adjeust some small things here and there, but in my experience so far these adjustments were pretty minor.

No, there's not. There a build update to ID CS 3.0.1. There a big
difference between a plugin and build update.

    Bob--

It's still a plug-in, or set of plug-ins, or a set of updated plug-ins. Remember: *Everything* in InDesign is a plug-in. There is no "core" application (well, there is, but it's nothing more than a plug-in manager).:-)

    Thanks,

Of course...but to lump that in with plugins such as InBooklet is
misleading. You can easily disable many plugins but once you install the
838 build update you can't exactly go back easily.

Case in point: the warning that you old INX files won't work once the
    update is completed.
