Default * What the..? Fully functioning fonts embedded in .ai files?

The documents uses fonts or characters which are not available or are in a
    different format than originally specified.

Do you still wish to open this document?

The above message appears when I open a project, in which I'd pasted a logo
that was sent to me (from another AI file). Now, I expected to see the logo
distorted or thrown out of whack after this message, but it looked
relatively the same. Enough that I couldn't tell if the font had been
    substituted or not.

Then I looked at my font list in the text window.. and sure enough, the
"missing" fonts are there. At the end of the list. Fonts I never had before.
They're listed there, only with an asterisk.

But it gets better. Not only do the fonts seem embedded in the project
somehow, but I can actually create NEW text boxes using these fonts that are
technically not installed on my computer. I thought the existing text had
just been outlined, but if I can create NEW text with them, then obviously
    the fonts are fully functional.

What's even stranger? I use a PC, and the logo I pasted in here is from an
..AI file that had been created on a Mac.

How is that possible? There are so many reasons for this to not be possible,
I don't know where to begin. Mac fonts being embedded in an AI file, then
piggy-backing on layers of text that have been copied/pasted into a new PC
    ..ai file?

    And remaining FUNCTIONAL?

    What the..?

Illustrator is creating temporary fonts (called faux fonts) with the
same metrics as the fonts, and using them in the document. While the
characters have the same metrics as the real font, the letter forms
    don't look the same.

I think if you try to save as a pdf or eps, whatever and then you open it
    elsewhere, you'll be SOL.
