When converting .eps to .pdf, file dimensions change...

Hello! I am trying to convert some .eps files (created in Illustrator 9.0) to .pdfs to be viewed...possibly printed. When I drag the 8.5x11 .eps into distiller, it creates the .pdf. Problem is, upon viewing the new file in Acrobat, the dimensions are changed: i.e. (the 8.5x11 .eps has become a 10.63x11.61 .pdf). Another .eps file ended up 14.89x11.61. Understand that the graphics and text don't fill up these inflated areas entirely, it's mostly white space.

I'm working with Acrobat 4.0 and Distiller 4.0. I've tried to manipulate the preferences and job options in each...but no luck. I downloaded the trial version of Acrobat and Distiller 6.0 and ran into the same problem. I even tried saving as a .pdf direct from Illustrator and Acrobat, but ran into resolution and inconsistency problems. For the record, my file sizes average 5m but do get as big as 20m. Any solutions, ideas, suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in Advance...

Draw an 8.5 x 11 box with no stroke or fill around the illustrator page and save as an eps again.
