When things disappear or become unavailable: 2nd of 3 FAQ proposals

Posted: 08-04-2004, 10:59 AM
This forum has many threads about strange and seemingly hopeless cases where things disappear or become unavailable. Most cases seem to have one of three possible causes, two of which have similar characteristics.

Hence this attempt to summarize the cases where either works. You may read a full version here (second hint in the list): <http://www.bugge.com/Family-and-friends/Illy/illy.html>

I hope others will contribute; maybe this thread can even form the basis of a FAQ about such cases.

I have tried to make a summary in the second post (no one reads the first post), which may serve as a first draft FAQ.

Third and fourth posts are lists of threads where the solutions have worked.

I am using posts to present most of the contents, not to clog this thread with a monstrous topic text.

I have worked with this topic for quite a while, mostly concentrated on the AIPrefs file: which cases it can actually help you with, and how to replace the needless sacrifice with a revival; the latter works just as any other invocation (When you use it, you may try incense, tapping the frame of the monitor, chanting, etc).

This work has also led to the topic I have just added: Working with the AIPrefs file.

FAQ proposal: When things disappear or become unavailable

Most cases seem to have one of three possible causes, two of which have similar characteristics. If you are in doubt you may round up the usual suspects: try all the solutions.

This is a summary; you may read more here (second hint in the list): <http://www.bugge.com/Family-and-friends/Illy/illy.html>

1) IF YOU CAN SEE AN OBJECT OR A TEXT, BUT THE TOOLS FOR WORKING WITH IT ARE INVISIBLE:

a) When the bounding box is invisible even though the object or text is selected, you have Hidden Bounding Box. Solution: Ctrl+Shift+B

b) When your other tools to modify objects and text, such as anchor points, handles, and baselines, are invisible even though the object or text is selected, you have Hidden Edges. Solution: Ctrl+H

You may check the visibility status by Alt+V/View.

2) IF TOOLS/PALETTES/PARTS OF ARTWORK DISAPPEAR, OR TOOLS BECOME UNAVAILABLE, YOU HAVE CORRUPTED AIPREFS SETTINGS WHICH NEED REPLACEMENT:

Best solution, if you have made one or more backups: Revive the AIPrefs file. This will preserve all your custom preference settings, including the default font. Copy the desired backup/custom AIPrefs file from its subfolder, and paste to replace the current AIPrefs file.

Second best solution: Delete the AIPrefs file. This will remove corrupted settings, but it will also reset all preferences to their original default settings, sacrificing all your custom settings.

See further instructions in the FAQ (presently: thread): Preserving/replacing the AIPrefs file.
