Where is your problem?
To set up *any* compiled kernel or module, you have to be root.
Why don't you want to be root to do this one-time task?
And installing modules to a path where the kernel is unable to find them is
somewhat counterproductive. Especially since you are not required to boot
with the new kernel and the new modules
The parts of a computer system that can be kicked.
