Which options on a G5 would push ship date back to SEP 29?
As recently as 2-3 days ago, I read that orders placed for G5's were
showing up with estimated ship date on or before August 29, 2003,
having been moved up from September 2, 2003.
I ordered one last night, and my estimated ship date is *September* 29,
2003!
So... either
1) a LOT of people ordered in the last day or so ;) or
2) something I ordered won't be ready for a month after the rest of it!
My order specs as:
- Dual 2.0
- Standard 512MB RAM
- Standard SuperDrive
- 2x250GB HD option
- Radeon 9800 Pro option
- Airport Extreme option
- Bluetooth option
- NO MODEM
If other people here have ordered G5's, can you post your specs, order
date and estimated ship date (available from www.apple.com/orderstaus)?
I'd like to try to deduce which of my chosen options, if any, is going
to take them an extra MONTH to do, so that I can call and un-choose it! :)
Thanks,
-Dan

Or, 3) there is confusion about what orders were being referred to. I
ordered my G5 on the day of announcement. I don't have any problem
believing that orders placed now are delayed a month. I *do* have
problems believing that Apple has a month's worth of production ready to
ship on the first day.

Combo optical drive
Single 250GB drive
No Airport Extreme
Included modem
but as I say I think your logic may be fault.

placed _within the last few days_ were still showing up as August 29,
but whoever wrote that may have mis-read the 9/29 as 8/29, having 8/29
on the brain.
The answer I got from Apple is "The systems that have ship by dates of
August 29 were ordered last month," which indicates you're exactly right.
I shall be patient. ;)

historically had problems shipping enough units to meet demand on hot
new products. It takes time to ramp up the factory to produce new
machines, and Apple is famous for coming out with hugely popular
products, and then not having enough inventory to meet demand.

Unix-supported internal modem is a nice feature, and I think it was only
$29 credit for removal (I ordered from the fed. employees page).
