Re: which version for OS9.2
Phil;
For 9.2, the probable best version was 5.5. I have used v. 6.x and it did run well in 9.2. But v.6 was the transitional version from OS 9 to OS X and there were certain behavior issues (nothing major, just performance annoyances).
So my best recommendation is v.5.5.

Re: which version for OS9.2
Actually I found 5.5 Buggy and I used 9.2.2.
The best ever version they came out with was 5.0.1e

Re: which version for OS9.2
Then again, which version is the best might be irrelevant unless you can actually find a legitimate source to purchase it. You can only buy the latest version through Adobe.

Re: which version for OS9.2
There use to be a company called Sun Remarketting that would buy up
outdated software from Companies (unopened packages) either from the
software Companies or the vendors and sell at a reduced price.

I ddon't know if the are still in business or not, or are still allowed
to do the same thing or not.

Re: which version for OS9.2
They're not in business. At the link you gave, pjonesCET, only the blog was active. Bob Cook said in the blog thread, "Sun Remarketing is not in business, yes this is more like a public service. I have a storage unit with some parts and a head fill of Apple History. If you are looking for spare parts for older machine maybe I can help."

Phil;
If you have trouble finding an older copy, I might have colleagues who have former editions. Just drop me a line @ acrobat8mrc@shaw.ca
Cheers

Re: which version for OS9.2
Just be careful that you are buying a legit copy that can be registered to you.
I've seen a lot of times when someone upgrades and they think they can sell the older version.
(pgary has been around long enough so he would know if that were the case)

Re: which version for OS9.2
Hi, I got myself a legitimate copy of ACROBAT (version 5.0). Now I need to know how to make pdf files from QuarkXPress. I tried using the PRINT function, but it asked for a printer, so as I don´t have one at the moment (and want to save it as a file any) I selected ADOBE PS. Which went okay, except I don´t know how to extract it from the virtual printer queue as a file. I then tried EXPORT - DOCUMENT AS PDF. It also asked for a printer, and this time I chose one of the drivers in CHOOSER, a LaserWriter. And got an error message: AN UNKNOWN ERROR HAS OCCURRED ID= -43.
What am I doing wrong?

graffiti;
No problem with legit copies. I teach Acrobat for a local university and am well aware of required licensed versions, both educational and retail. Any versions available would be legitimate, registered owner only software.

Re: which version for OS9.2
phil;
Here are a couple of notes regarding Acrobat 5.0.5 installation, PPD file information and the AdobePS 8.x printer file requirements. Once these are installed, you should be able to see the Adobe printer icon in the Chooser panel:
"Installing Acrobat on Mac OS
In addition to Adobe Acrobat, the Acrobat installer includes the AdobePS™ 8.7 printer driver and a set of Distiller® PostScript® Printer Description (PPD) files. Before using Distiller to create PDF files, you may need to select a PPD file for the printer you intend to use.
To install Acrobat (Mac OS):
1 Insert the Adobe Acrobat CD into your CD drive.
2 Double-click the Install Adobe Acrobat 5.0 icon.
3 In the Adobe Acrobat Installer dialog box, click Continue to move past the introduction. Follow the on-screen instructions to select a language and accept the license agreement.
4 Specify the type of installation you want:
- To use the standard installation, choose Easy Install from the pop-up menu. This installs the program files for Acrobat, Acrobat Distiller, PDFWriter, Adobe PS, Create Adobe PDF, standard plug-ins, and the online documentation.
- To install only particular components, choose Custom Install, and select the components in the list box. You can include any of the components in Easy Install, plus support for PDF documents with Asian-language files.
Acrobat attempts to launch in the language of the operating system. If you have installed a European language, you can have Acrobat launch in that language. Choose Edit > Preferences > General > Display in Acrobat after installing, and choose the language from the Application Language pop-up menu. The change takes effect the next time you start Acrobat.
For a description of any component that can be installed, choose Custom Install to see a list of the components, and click the I button to the right of the component you want in the list.
5 Click Install, and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation. When the process is complete, a message tells you that Acrobat is installed. You can register as part of the installation process, or cancel the registration when prompted and do it at a later time.
6 Click Restart to restart your computer.

Sorry. That's what I meant. That you would know. After reading my post, I can see where it doesn't look like I was saying that. :)

Re: which version for OS9.2
From QuarkXPress, you'll need to print to a PS file, and use Acrobat Distiller to distill that into a PDF file. (At least that's the way I usually went about it).
To do that, follow the following steps. First of all, you'll need to look in your Utilities folder for the "Desktop Printer Utility" application. Launch that and use it to create a desktop printer you can use to generate PS files. In the New Desktop Printer dialog, choose "AdobePS" from the With popup menu, choose "Translator (PostScript)" in the list, and then click OK. In the new window that appears, change the PPD to the Adobe Acrobat ppd file and choose a default location, then save the Desktop printer.
Then, from QuarkXPress, open the Chooser, choose the AdobePS icon, and then close the Chooser. Back in Quark, you'll choose the printer you created in the previous step with the Desktop Printer Utility. Choose to print to file rather than the printer (think it's in the upper right corner). This will allow you to generate a PS file which you can use Distiller to convert into a PDF file. You can set up a watched folder in Distiller and then save your ps files to that location from Quark.
Hope this helps...

Re: which version for OS9.2
Many thanks to Gary and Mark. Finally I´ve got a pdf, though it will probably take me a while yet to work out how I´ve done it.
