Which way to go dynamic
I can not delay going dynamic any longer and so I must make a decision about
which road to take.
I build gardening web sites. Most important what I need to do is to display
cultivar characteristic information regarding a particular plant along with
a photo. At this time I should be able to get by with a single table with
fields for all the characteristics and photos.
I have DWMX currently on XP-pro. I do have IIS configured on my machine and
I installed .NET framework This is all working.
I have been leaning toward ASP.NET but need to know if this is my best
option. I am a designer, not a programmer, however, I am proficient with
DWMX.
I host with Crystal Tech which supports ASP.NET, Access, MS SQL, and MYSQL.
Along with which platform I should pursue, I also would like to know which
database I should use. I am familiar with Access but believe it encounters
problems with concurrent connections.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
I have also been delaying upgrading to MX2004 because I did not want to get
caught upgrading to see before 2005/6 is out.

Hidee Hoo Bobby!!
You didn't mention Coldfusion. That's the route I would recommend. I truly
do believe you'll find it much easier and you'll be developing faster once
you get your head around it. Put CF with MS SQL Server for your database and
you'll have the ability to build some very powerfully apps.
Don't get me wrong I'm not knocking .NET. I've just never felt inspired to
take a look at it.

P.S.
You'd be able to deliver a lot of flowers to a lot of browsers with the
combination of CF & MS SQL.

Re: Which way to go dynamic
I saw where CF7 was released recently. There is a free Developer Edition and
also the $1,300 Standard Edition. I am not familiar with CF but I do know
that Crystal Tech also offers CF7 hosting packages. Could I get away with
using the free version, or do I actually need the Standard Version to
develop locally and then deploy?
What do I need to buy or download to get started building an MS SQL
database?
Thanks,
Bobby

developer edition will be fine. It gets cranky about serving to more
than one IP address, but As Far As I Know, that's its only limitation.
It will run on either a Windows or *nix box, and will even run
standalone. Your best bet is probably to mimic as closely as possible
your production server environment.

Re: Which way to go dynamic
You can get a free version of SQL Server 2000 called the "Desktop Edition",
usually abbreviated MSDE, here:
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/msde/default.asp
You fall well within the restrictions of the license since your host will
actually have the production database.
