Default White Backgrounds with Illustrator Drop Shadows

I am having issues making an eps with type which has a drop shadow in it and placing this file into InDesign. I keep getting a white background which is caused by the drop shadow. I am using Illustrator 10 but have not had much experience with Illustrator. I am simply putting in the type, adding a drop shadow and exporting as eps. I have tried flattening transparency etc but with no luck. Please could someone point me in the right direction?

    Dropshadow uses transparency.

Eps files do not support transparency. It is a flat format.

PDF and AI formats do support transparency. (1.4+ or ver 9+)

So...save the file as a AI or PDF and place that.

    I have tried flattening transparency

That is a little backwards since you do not want the white background. :)

Dump the dropshadow in the Illustator file, save it as a .ai file, and apply the dropshadow after palcing it in InDesign.

… or just create the drop shadow in InDesign; ID also supports transparency,by the way.
