White Text Box with Drop Shadow Text on Windows 2000
I'm new to Indesign, having just got the CS set of software. Used PM 7.0 and Acrobat 5.0 previously.
On single page of InDesign, I have reversed text in a solid background, with a drop shadow on it. I output it to PDF file using Acrobat 6.0.
The text that has the shadow appears with a white text box in the PDF file. I checked to make sure I had set the text box background to no color, and text to white, but still the white box.
I have Windows 2000 on a Dell Dimension 530.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Tom Glowka

i'vr had this exact same problem in Illustrator. I cant offer any help
but uh, i'll be watching. The only thing that seemed to help in
illustrator was for some reason, make the dropshadow, then select type
and change to a different font, then select type and change back to
original font. there may have been a flatten transparency command in
there somewhere.
It could be a font problem.... in my case anyway.
good luck

Re: White Text Box with Drop Shadow Text on Windows 2000
What are the PDF export settings? What color space are you creating your
document in? If you're exporting to Acrobat 4, what are your
transparency flattener settings?

Where do I find transparency flattener settings?
What do you mean "what color space are you creating your document in"?
Have special settings from printer that I converted from Acrobat 5.0.
The PDF maker settings worked fine on a similar file, so I believe it's the InDesign file.
I found a solution by changing the area the type is reversed out of from Spot to Process color, it distilled correctly.
Seems like I went around the problem instead of solving it. Or did I?
Thanks

Re: White Text Box with Drop Shadow Text on Windows 2000
So, you're using CMYK. You'll find the transparency flattener settings
under the edit menu. Make sure it's CMYK.
Again, what are your PDF export settings? And please note the exporting
is NOT the same as distilling.

Transparency flattener settings should be as the default.
High Resolution
Raster/vector balance:100
line art and text resolution:1200 ppi
Gradien and mesh resolution: 300ppi
Caonvert all text to outlines: Off
Convert all strokes to outlines: Off
Clip complex regions: NA
When I output from InDesign, I output to PDF and it automatically distills for me based on my settings.
Since there 4 different settings tabs in PDF settings, any one in particular you're interested in?

You're not distilling, you're exporting. There is a very big difference.
As for the settings I'm interested in...All of them.

When I export as a PDF, does Acrobat not distill this based on my settings and output a PDF file? How is exporting to PDF and distilling different?
Is there a way I can output as a postscript (ps) file and then distill the way I did for Pagemaker 7?
Thanks,
Tom

Re: White Text Box with Drop Shadow Text on Windows 2000
I'd recommend two changes. Change compatibility to Acrobat 5--which will
keep your transparency live--and change leave color unchanged to CMYK.
That will still preserve your spot colors.
[This is a good time to ask why you were using spot colors if you didn't
intend to print using them.}
With export to PDF you don't use Acrobat at all. The process is done
completely by InDesign. It is not like PM where the export simply
automated the distilling process.
If you want to go back to the PM method, do it exactly the same way you
used to. Print to postscript and distill or print directly to Adobe
PDF(if you have Acrobat 6) or Distiller.

Guess I was using Spot color because that was what the printer wanted in Pagemaker file. The Acrobat 4 and no color changes were his preferences too, didn't ask why, but it ran smoothly from PM 7 and Acrobat 5.
I like InDesigns output to PDF method just fine, if I get it to work for me.
Just wanted Pagemaker-like method for backup.
How can I output a file to postscript from InDesign?

Re: White Text Box with Drop Shadow Text on Windows 2000
File>print. Choose postscript file and then the appropriate PPD.

If I choose a printer, it automatically chooses a PPD. I can't chaneg.

If you choose postscript file from the printer selection you can pick
any PPD you want.

Thanks alot. You've been a great help.
I still can't understand why the spot color with reversed type wouldn't work correctly when output to PDF. Is that a glitche in InDesign?
Also, got a call from printer who said they needed the box in spot color magenta, not process. I have since sent them the InDesign file and will let them tell me how we can make it work.
