Who does the imposing?
Just thought I'd tap into your knowledge re who should do the imposing on print jobs. The situation is this... I'm working on a brochure and the printer (been requested to use him) has asked that I place three-up on a customised page size (to accommodate bleed, trim, etc). I have the tools to do that, but every other job we've done the printer has flat artwork as a native or PDF and they do the imposing.
I'm sure this is the preferred way because the printer is best placed to to do the imposing to take into account the sheet size and other dymanics of their own press.
What do I do? Stick to my usual practice or do as he asked and leave it at that? Would I be too cheeky in asking for a discount for doing something that he should be doing?
Never had this happen before, so just hoping this is not a trend.

Re: Who does the imposing?
As designer, I always produce PDFs which are then imposed as required by the printer's repro dept.
To my mind, it is the printer's job to do the imposition. You do not have the knowledge of his press / processes / preferences necessary to do the best job.
What about trapping, will you have to do this too? This is another task I feel is best left to the printer.

Re: Who does the imposing?
Another Yea for printer
You also don't know the workflow--is it work and turn or work and tumble (can make a huge difference on how things are set up!!!)
Printers should always imposition--mine generally scream if you have forgotten to break your reader spreads if you have proofed in the office!

Re: Who does the imposing?
Thanks for the advice. I'm gonna call the printer to discuss specifics. But it's not something I'd like to get into on an ongoing basis. Thanks again.
