Who has the most reliable scanner drivers? OCR?
Looking to buy an inexpensive (<$200) scanner for OS X (since my UMAX
SCSI scanner is the only thing I boot OS 9 for anymore). I'm not an
artist, and my experience with scanners has been that I spend more time
screwing around with buggy drivers, than with the quality of the
images.
Any suggestions?

aren't any _cheap_ SCSI scanners which work under OS X, mostly because there
aren't any cheap SCSI scanners any more, not since the cheap scanner market
was eaten whole by USB scanners.
And don't even think about using a UMAX scanner under OS X, they've abandoned
virutally all of their Mac scanners, USB _and_ SCSI. There are no UMAX
drivers for almost all of them, and only some are supported by VueScan. If
you insist on using a UMAX scanner, you're almost certainly gonna have two
choices:
1 stay in OS 9
2 use it in Classic under OS X.
Better you junk it and get a faster, cheaper, Epson or HP or Canon USB
scanner which has OS X drivers... unless, of course, your whole object is to
whine. In that case, carry on.

effectively abandoned the Mac market. There are Epson SCSI scanners which
work under OS X, but they're expensive. At least four or five times your max
price.

I've been using my UMAX Astra 600S (SCSI) on OSX for nearly a year on my G4
DMM. True, there is no UMAX software for OSX but Vue Scan (shareware) works
like a charm. Unfortunately, the price has gone up to $49.00 (it was $40.00)
when I bought it) but it's turned my scanner into the machine UMAX never made
it into, even in OS9. And it was still cheaper than the $179.00 Epson scanner I
wanted. Eventually I will change but I can't justify that right now.
I was lucky to already have a SCSI PCI card that I was using with my G3. I
think you could probably find one for $30 if you look around.

doesn't by any means indicate that OS X can't use SCSI scanners. Ask
UMAX why, but don't assume that you can't use SCSI scanners at all in OS
X, because that's far from true.
And when you whine the next time someone calls you a troll, it's posts
like this one that demonstrate you appear to be more interested in
simply putting down Apple than dealing with facts.

application. I paid $49 bucks for the 6400, works good.

not. It appears to me that Umax -- which was never noted for updating
its drivers -- is dropping all support for Mac.
But then, as they say, it's buyer beware when entering the bazaars of
carpet sellers and computer vendors.

And I'd use Vuescan if I could, even though I am somewhat leary about
sticking those fixer-uppers in my machine, an aversion acquired from
old OS crashes that after hours of fiddling came down to wonky
extensions installed by shareware utilities with techy names and short
lifespans.

Dropped. Not too long after the time USB came out actually...
