Why are things so small
Other than changing the resolution of my monitors, are there any other ways of making menu text and palettes larger? I'm having a very difficult time seeing things.
Any tips for customizing the work space for a person with failing eyesight would be appreciated.
Thanks,

1) Change monitor resolution.
2) New prescription for glasses.

Re: Why are things so small
I can sympathise with Dan's problem. I started out short-sighted so I use contact lenses, but nowadays need reading glasses on top of them for small print, and I find that they don't give me enough depth of field for comfortable working when I have to read the screen and look at a book or something. Zooming and changing the resolution aren't really solutions, because they affect everything, not just the palettes.
Photoshop now does the right thing, with its option to change the size of palette text, so I guess what's needed is a deluge of requests to add this feature to InDesign.

Re: Why are things so small
When faced with the same problem many years ago, I asked my ophtalmologist for a recipe for bifocal lenses: lower part for reading and the keyboard, and upper part for screen. This worked very well.

Re: Why are things so small
Bifocals are not recommended for displaywork - you need dedicated glasses for work on onscreen with distance set for normal readin distance for the display. Bifocals will get you a very sore neck in the long run.

Re: Why are things so small
Nini, they didn't in my case. Remember I was using the upper -and larger- part for viewing the screen, so there was no neck bending involved at all. Lowering my eyes for viewing the keyboard was a natural movement. And of course they were old fashioned large glasses, not the tiny things in fashion nowadays.
In any case, they were quite a lot more comfortable than switching glasses... :-)

Re: Why are things so small
Thanks for your replies and suggestions. I do appreciate them.
I do have glasses just for working on the computer. Now if I could just find them. On my monitors, I have the resolution set as low as I can without using up so much screen space that I'm forever scrolling or moving the pages around. I'm thankful for Universal Access with its now easy-to-use zoom feature, but it's somewhat shaky and awkward. Doing layouts and finals for long documents is a terrible grind having to zoom in and out all day. I do enough of that just because of the document anyway; shouldn't have to do it even more because of the app's design--some things are really very small.
What I would really like to see is what Nigel mentioned, being able to resize the palettes and the palettes' text, and a few other things too. If I drag the palettes onto my side monitor, I would like to be able to resize them any way I want. That would be really great. As it is now, I have my side monitor set to a very low resolution, just to see the tools better.
No huge complaint on my part. I'm not going to sue or anything. Just a reminder that we're not all twenty-four with perfect vision, so please design things appropriately.
Thanks,
Dan Worley
