WHY Breaking Text with CS to 10.0
Using mac OS 10.2.4
When receiving a CS document back saved to AI 10.0 from a client via email the text is no longer in a string but broken-up. It looks fine on screen until you want to edit the text - only to find a word like 'foundation' will be in 4 or more separate bits.
Apparently a colleague has had a similar experience when receiving a AI 10.0 document from me encountering the same problem when opening it with Adobe CS. Anyone else come across this problem? if so have you a solution.

Re: WHY Breaking Text with CS to 10.0
It's qute a lengthy thread, but worth reading the discussion at Steve McGuire "Illustrator CS: Let's talk about the new text engine." 3/30/04 3:54pm </cgi-bin/webx?13@@.2ccdcea3/166> (at the top of the forum list). With a little effort, you can get the text back together. It'll be a good day when everyone upgrades to CS.

Re: WHY Breaking Text with CS to 10.0
Rick Johnson has an AppleScript called ConcatText that puts the text back together, quickly and reliably. You can find it at <http://personalpages.tds.net/~graffix/software/scripts.html>
It will be a great day when Adobe restores proper kerning to path-type and rewires the Pencil-Smoothing tool so that it works on path type objects. Even if everybody upgrades to CS, it's useless to me (as a mapmaker) because I have so many text objects that have type attached to a path. And that's beside the point of compatibility with legacy files my clients require.
When the rest of the world abandons AI8, 9 and 10 for CS, who knows what Adobe will have done with, or to, Illustrator. I hope Adobe's priorities are compatibility and reliability.

Re: WHY Breaking Text with CS to 10.0
But I look into the future - one year? three? five? - and all your new maps are in CS format; your legacy files are being updated to CS as it becomes necessary, and many of them are already done; your clients are all using some Illustrator CS 12. Eventually, it will happen.

Re: WHY Breaking Text with CS to 10.0
I look into the past and see that my Illustrator 8 was compatible with my clients' 5, my 9 and 10 with their 8. In those days I was free to explore and exploit the most recently released version of Illustrator without requiring anything of my clients except that they get their check to me net 30 days.
Thankfully, I continue to work in 8 and 10, with a good dose of FH10 thrown in when I like the speedy but slightly reckless thrills of Macromedia.

Re: WHY Breaking Text with CS to 10.0
Not wishing to spoil your sparring guys but to get back to my little problem. I have downloaded the Rick Johnson script as suggested but what do I do with it to fix the broken text.

Re: WHY Breaking Text with CS to 10.0
"Thus AI CS sits around like a first iteration software product that is a curiosity instead of a mainstay in my day-to-day production work. "
The one version we bought to test sits un-installed on my shelf. It will be a long time before we upgrade the rest of our computers (7) to CS. I wonder how many other people aren't going to upgrade because of Adobe's blunder (sorry I mean, new feature)?
