Why do I get a placeholder when trying to use Flash buttons? - Macromedia Dreamweaver

I just loaded Dreamweaver MX 6.1 on my TiBook. I'm running Mac OSX v10.2.6. When I try to place a Flash button or text, all I get is a placeholder, & the file doesn't save in my site file. I thought I was doing everything right, I'm even looking at the visual quickstart guide for MX by Tarin Towers, but obviously something isn't kosher. Can someone help please?! Where am I going wrong?...

    I believe it's standard practice to just get a place holder. You won't see
    any flash while in dreamweaver, only when you preview it. I could be wrong,
    but this is how it's always been for me.

    you should be able to click "Play" in the property inspector and see
    the Flash. you should make sure the swf file is in your site before
    adding it.

    I went through the new site wizard when I set up my site, so I'll have to go back & read if I missed something. I thought when I hit "Apply" I'm supposed to be able to see the Flash button in design view. All I get is the grey box with the Flash symbol. When I hit play it disappears completely. The button is being saved on my hard drive even though I'm specifying it to save in my site folder. When I hit preview in browser there is no button to be found. I never ran across this in Dreamweaver 4. I'm very confused, lame, or both.

    Macintosh??

    to rule in or out a mac specific thing- could you do these steps?

    Open a new file in Dreamweaver with File-->New
    -->Don't Save It<---

    Insert an image from that Site's Local Site Folder.

    view the source, and please paste the full <img path in a reply.

    This is to check for "funky" characters in the path from the HD down to the
    site folder.

    Here is what the code reads when I insert an image from the site folder in a new, unsaved doent:

    <img sr/Mystery%20Machine/Users/vmtent/Doents/Shoot%27n%20Stars%20July%2010/Images/SSPlogocolor.jpg" width="299" height="432" c="file:///>
