Why do MAC InDesign files sometimes not open on PC?

I have two customers that send me indesign files that they make on a Mac, not sure which version of ID. Usually i have no problem opening files from macs in Indesign on my PC but I dont know what those few are doing to theirs on the Mac but it will crash my PC Indesign CS2. What is it that they are doing or what is it that I can do to fix this?

The first thing I would look at as being the problem is fonts.
Especially when dealing with different platforms.

Not having the .indd extension?

If they sent it via email; but did not zip compress it; it could be byte-scrambled in transmission and therefore unopenable. If it opens and crashes, I would suspect a corrupt font, first of all. How are you setting up the fonts from their document?

I've got problem with one in-design file I know it's made on MAC and when I try to open it on my PC machine In-design crashes. I send it to a friend with MAC and he said the file si ok (opens and is editable) so what may cause the problem?
