Why does ID 2 use 99% of my processor for 4:04 when starting up?

Default Why does ID 2 use 99% of my processor for 4:04 when starting up?

Nothing really to add to the subject. I start ID and just walk away because it's useless for 4 or 5 minutes. Don't know what it's doing but I'd like to make it stop.

    Thanks,

You could add to the subject if you are using a MacIIcx with 16MB of RAM. What kind of system are you currently working with?

Your other thread about uncompressed drives seems to indicate you have some sort of Frankenstein system. Does InDesign work faster on another computer that does not have so many goodies attached?

    Just for your ref:

My old P3/500MHz with 512Mb RAM running W2K sp4 does it (loading an empty pasteboard in ID2.0.2) in 7.3 secs flat.

Sorry, yeah, I could've added that. I'm on Win2000 with 1 gig of RAM. I run a RAID 5 compressed by Win2000. I wouldn't define it as a Frankenstein system but I guess that's open to interpretation. We've only got one workstation here running ID so I have nothing to compare it to besides PM, which runs fine. And, there aren't really any "goodies" attached.

The problem is not that it runs slow. After 4 or 5 minutes it's fine. It's just when the program is launched it has something to do which consumes the program, making ID terribly difficult to use. So, I either walk away for a few minutes or use another program while I wait.

And, it's been like this since day one. ID 1 & 1.5 did not behave like this.

As mentioned above, on my aging system it runs (according to your record) 32 times faster.
I would run some tests on the compressed RAID 5 and verify that this is not a good solution. Compressing checksums held on the third HDD of your level5 configuration is certainly not the best way. These have to be uncompressed to verify the stripped data (also compressed) on the rest two drives. Who recommended a compressed RAID5 system?

PS Change it to a normal RAID5 system and it will fly

Do you have any files in your Open Recent menu that are on networked
    drives?

George, it already flies ... after 4 minutes. The machine itself has no performance problems.

Guy, yes, all the files I work on are on networked storage. Is it trying to verify that each file is still there or something? I've also got 8 different networked printers installed. Same thing there; looking for printers?

I was assuming that your array was attached: that was your 'goodie'. My definition of a Frankenstein system is anything that has a bunch of goodies attached to it. Pretty much any designer is working with a Frankenstein system. I guess a 'bionic man' or 'bionic woman' is a better name than 'Frankenstein' but I have an unrelated personal problem with Lee Majors that precludes me from making a bionic reference.

The idea is to break your system down to it's basic out-of-the-box state (disconnect array, unplug unused USB devices, etc) before you operated on it during a lightening storm in a dark castle. Can you boot the computer without the array and test the load times for InDesign?

Yes - pull the plug on all those printers. Get your system back to basics and check the load times. Then gradually add your peripherals until you find out what is slowing things down.

I bet it is the networked files in the Open Recent menu and not the
networked printers. See what happens if you open and then close a bunch
of different local files to purge the Open Recent menu.
