Why is IE 5.x so slow in Mac OS 8.6?? - Mac Applications & Software

I have an old Performa 6400 upgraded to G3/300mhz with 64 MB of RAM and Mac OS 8.6. I use Internet Explorer 5.x in it and after surfing 4 or 5 Web sites the browser and the entire OS drags to a crawl! Very slow like hell! Why is that?? That didn't happen with IE 4.xx and it doesn't happen with Netscape 4.xx. Any idea???...

It doesn't happen on my Performa with 8.5 and IE 5.1. In fact,
I've started to use IE more because it's faster than Netscape
    on that platform.

If things start out well and then slow down, some
part of your system's state is changing as the program runs.
That usually either means memory gets allocated till it's
all used up, or files are being written and the system is using
    lots of time doing it.

Do you have the same problem with other programs? If so,
I'd look at the virtual memory settings, and perhaps
reinstall the OS. If not, my first guess is the caches and
logs that IE writes. If it only happens with pages that
use compute-intensive things like Javascript and lots of
fancy CSS, and gets better when you open a simpler page,
then that might just be how long it takes your system
to execute a complicated rendering. Can you narrow down
when the symptoms happen and when they don't?

IE 5.2.2 is incredibly slow on an 867MHz G4 with OS 10.2.6. Anything
with layers, like those annoying mouse-over menus, causes the spinning
beachball to appear. I've been using OmniWeb for X.

I never had this problem in 8.6 using IE 5.1. Netscape 4 had patchy CSS
1 support that's in IE 5.x. Choose your poison and live with the pain.
