that 5.0.7 box with the delay after answering passwd prompt but only
when using the new ssh 3.7.1p1...

netstat -a hangs for a long time.
letting it go and just waiting, eventually one line of output (after
the initial headers which show up fast), then another long pause and
    one more line of output...

netstat -an does not hang at all. full output zips by at once.

    ok dns...

    well...
    # cat /etc/resolv.conf:
    hostresorder local bind
    nameserver 205.171.3.65
    nameserver 205.171.16.251

    # ping -c 1 205.171.3.65
    PING 205.171.3.65 (205.171.3.65): 56 data bytes

1 packets transmitted, 1 packets received, 0% packet loss
    round-trip min/avg/max = 21.593/21.593/21.593 ms

    # ping -c 1 205.171.16.251
    PING 205.171.16.251 (205.171.16.251): 56 data bytes

1 packets transmitted, 1 packets received, 0% packet loss
    round-trip min/avg/max = 71.939/71.939/71.939 ms

    So far, So good.
I commented out first one then the other nameserver from resolv.conf
and pinged google.com each time. worked immediately both times.

??? perplexed. so what causes -a to hang and -an to work ?

my 504 box has /etc/resolv.conf like this

    domain foo
    hostresorder local bind
    nameserver 146.115.8.20
    nameserver 146.115.8.19
    nameserver 198.6.1.5

foo is not a registered domain and lacks .com.

Also, everything on my little lan has an entry in /etc/hosts.

checking a clients 505 box, no problems there either, same setup.

Perhaps this is the old reverse-dns problem?
