Widow and orphan controlsdon't work - Adobe Indesign Windows

I can't seem to get widow and orphan controls to work. I have them set to 2 lines but throughout my doc, I have single line widows and orphans. Am I doing something wrong or is ID CS3.0.1?...

How are you applying them? Through paragraph styles? If so, are you sure the styles are correctly applied with no local overrides?

    Dominic,
I set them in the Keep Options of Para. Style Settings. I'm not aware of local overrides, but I'm new to ID so could have inadvertently set something. By the way, don't I recognise your name from the Ventura usergroup?

    Hi Jon,

I can't speak for ID CS2, but in previous versions of InDesign the keep options all work properly. I know this is going to sound like a stupid question, but have you actually applied your styles to the text? Try selecting all and applying the style with the CTRL key held down; this clears all manual overrides, if any.

I tried what you suggested and the problem remains.

Just what settings are you using? And to how many of your paragraphs have you applied them? There are ways of setting up keep options that simply can't be respected because they would result in no text at all being set, so InDesign will override if it needs to. There's a preference that you can set in Preferences/Composition that will cause InDesign to highlight any situations where it had to override your settings. Do you have that activated? What does it tell you?

Another thing to check and make sure - turn on hidden characters. I've had copy editors swear they didn't have single line paragraphs but the doent had accidental carriage returns.

2 for widows and 2 lines for orphans. I think the problem has to do with text flowing into frames that are obscured (under) by full bleed pix frames (with with text wrap set to wrap around borders.) Woul;d this cause the problem? How can I avoid it?
    Thanks for everyone's help.

    Jon,

Ah yes, you're right. I've noticed that, and I tend to agree that it is a bug. Falls into the design-oversight category of bug, but a bug nonethelss. I try to remember to delete those fully obscured frames, but I don't always remember.
