will iMac boot OS X from external firewire drive
Copied entire contents of internal hard drive to external drive for
backup. Can select and boot from external copy of OS 9 but X does not
seem to work. Does this mean I would need to re-install X on the
external drive to make it bootable (just copying files not good
enough), or is it impossible to boot the iMac in X from an external
firwire drive?

boots just fine. It seems to be nearly as fast as the internal drive
and much quieter.
