    Weird that the XP NTFS would load on a W2K OS.

    But, is there really a difference between XP NTFS and W2K? I have Partition Magic, and perhaps I should look. What do I look for?

    I just looked at my partitions, and there is no indication of any changes anywhere. How does the two file systems identify themselves?

    They also EOL'd Windows NT 4, so they're in the process of burning bridges eliminating unnecessary backward compatibility.

    Partition Commander identified them by version number, my WIN2K boot partition was identified by the XP version number. I'll reboot into it again later and take down the numbers. I did a boot backup on Monday, just before the service packupdate and there was no problem with the OS and NTFS version number being compatible.

    Don't blow a gasket just yet, your WIN2K installation is not tanked and there is a full compatibility with WIN2K and XP. Possibly, in the future, XP may be made not to see WIN2K partitions, I know there are problems with the earlier NT4 partitions that have not been reformatted with an NT service pack 4 or later installed.

    Well, since I am stand alone, I don't suppose I will experience Pierre's problems.

    No specific ID #'s in Partition Magic, only ntfs or fat 32 etc.

    Now, I notice that the boot up time has increased. Since I did not choose the option to backup for possible uninstall, I have no way of simply checking. I assume if I try to uninstall now, I will be faced with a minimum of re-installing the service packs, or possibly the os as well.(?)

    I have perhaps too much in Startup as well but I don't know what's critical and what's not. Some things I can understand like MS Office or Netscape, but the rest is gibberish. Where can I find a guide to critical startup items?

    >My understanding is that as long as the utitily can run under XP it can
    read the drive correctly<<

    Ahhh, there's the rub. My version is as old as W2k, so I have no idea if it will play nicely with XP or not.

    Lawrence:

    If I read correctly, you are usng W2k. Most of what runs in the background in W2k operates under the guise of a "service". Many services can be swithced off or set to manual. There are guides to this process on the Web that I have run across from time to time, although I can't vouch for the accuracy of any of them. Here is one:

    <http://www.blkviper.com/WIN2K/servicecfg.htm>

    As for the ability to control other startup items, since W2k does not have the handy MSConfig utility, you can either borrow it from someone who has XP--or download it here:

    <http://www.thetechguide.com/downloads.html>

    Or use this substitute:

    <http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml>

    Good luck!

    Lawrence: I haven't noticed any changes in my startup time. I don't appear to have any effect other than the change to version 3.1 on the boot drive.
