Woodcut font - Where is it?

Default Woodcut font - Where is it?

I have Creative Suite Ed. version for WIN. I am trying to access the Adobe Wood Type Ornaments font, which was included with the program. It is on the list of fonts in InDesign, but all I get are boxes with "X"s in them and dots. The font file is there with the other Adobe fonts in the Common Files>Adobe>Fonts folder as WoodtypeOrnamentsStd.otf (58k), but when I try to look at it with ATM, all I get is ovals.

What do I do to access this font?

    Thank you.

Does your version of Windows support OTF? Do you have the most recent ATM that supports OTF?

Yes to both. I am running WIN 2000 Pro SP4. All of my other OTFs seem to work fine.

The ATM is ATM Light that came with the "Type Classics for Learning" collection I bought.

OTFs need the full version of ATM.

OTFs need the full version of ATM.

If by that, you mean they need ATM Deluxe, no they don't. ATM4.1 Light or Deluxe will let you display and print OT fonts on Windows 9x, but W2K and XP don't need ATM anyway for OT fonts. David, what version of ATM did you install? And as I recall, the woodtypes fonts may have a lot of empty slots. Are you sure you're looking in the right place?

    David,

If you check the Glyphs palette you'll see that the glyphs are indeed in the font.

The trick to typing them from the keyboard is to set the font first and then type (although, my preference for fonts like this is to import from the Glyphs palette). If you type and then convert you will indeed get the pink boxes you describe.

There is a trick for forcing InDesign to remap such characters after the fact but I can never remember exactly what it is. Something to do with holding down a couple of modifier keys when you assign the font to the text.

I just tested Adobe WoodType Ornaments Std on my Macintoshes and I don't think there's any mapping with the the alphabetic keys on the keyboard at all. The only way I can access the characters is from the Glyph palette. This is unlike other pi fonts I tried like Symbol, Zapf Dingbats, or Webdings. I expect Windows is the same.

Use the Glyph palette. There's also supposed to be a keyboard command for calling out glyphs by Unicode number as I recall, but I don't know what it is.

Okay - I checked the Glyphs and they are indeed there. The first 23 characters are just the ovals. Which now brings up a new question: I count only about 98 ornaments. Is that all there is? (Fade up song from the 60s).

    Thanks to all.

Yup. Make sure you check both styles. The Type 1 Woodcuts were two
fonts. All the glyphs are now in one OpenType font.

Windows XP comes with OTFs. But it doesn't come with ATM of any flavor.
