Default Re: Word Links - to PDF

I am new to Adobe and PDFMaker (and this forum). I am using Word 2002, SP1 on Win XP Pro V5.1 SP1. I have multiple Word docs. Right now each doc is bookmarked and contains links to these bookmarks as well as to the bookmarks in the other docs. The links all work fine in Word. When I convert using PDFMaker (Word macro from Adobe 5.0.5), the links are converted, remaining as file names with the extent .doc. The additional information in the link as to the specific bookmark location seems to be lost. I am experimenting prior to building multiple, large Word documents that I will want to convert to pdf. Each of the documents must contain many links to locations within it as well as to locations within the other docs. I want to be able to build everything in Word including the links, then convert to pdf and have all the links work properly (that is, each link points to the correct location in the correct pdf file). What is the best way to define the links in Word so that they will convert correctly to pdf? In Word, defining bookmarks and then using those for link destinations is easy to do and the bookmarks can be labeled so that they are very descriptive of the location in the document. Will I have to combine the multiple docs into a single document in order for links across docs to be converted to pdf? How do I get the link destination filename to convert to the pdf filename?

I am experiencing the same problem. I have Word 2002, Windows XP -Professional and Acrobat 5.0.5. All my links and bookmarks work within Word however they don't work once the word doc has been converted to pdf. I have tried these two things: Open the word file, convert to adobe pdf, and place several pdf's inside a folder. When I open one of the pdf files and click on a link I get this error message: "The file c:\program files\microsoft office\office10\winword.exe is set to be launched by this pdf file." When I say "open" the word file is opened but the link only takes me to the first page. I get the same error message when I created multiple pdf files (Document - insert pages)
On my adobe read me file it says that in order to successfully convert links during pdf creation for XP documents we should do the following - Select file, create pdf, from file . . . On the dialog box select Microsoft office, press settings, on the dialog box turn on the "enable accessibility and reflow (Office 2000/XP only) and add bookmarks and links to the adobe pdf file check boxes the press OK to confirm settings. - - - WHERE the heck IS this found? I've opened a word doc and acrobat - no where is there a prompt for "create pdf" - even when I use distiller - there is nothing that says create pdf. Can anyone help????????????????/

Sherry, Did you ever get an answer to this problem? You posted this question in March and it is now May 2004.

Those instructions are for Acrobat 6.0. File > Create PDF was new with
    Acrobat 6.0.

In Acrobat 5.0 you create a PDF from Word, by using the Acrobat MENU
    that is added to Word.

    Aandi,
Your answer makes no sense to me. Sherry's problem was #2 out of 7 within this topic - she said "I have a similar problem. I have a word document that has links within the document (bookmarks). The links work until I PDF the document. I also get the blue highlighted words that look like links but they do not work. I have Word 2000 and Acrobat 5.05--can you help?"

This was recorded in March but I have not sees a solution and it is May 14.

If you or anyone else can help me with a similiar problem - please refer to my question #5 above - I still need help with this and I don't know how else to solve it.

Referring to message #5, I'm using the PDFMaker macro in Word when I convert my Word documents to pdf format. I've examined the checkbox options under the "Bookmarks" tab in "Change conversion settings" of this macro's menu item in Word. Note that these "bookmarks" refer to what bookmarks will be created for the "Bookmarks" tab in the pdf version. It doesn't seem to affect the conversion of Word links whose destination is a Word bookmark. I've checked all the "Headings" checkboxes under the "Bookmarks" tab in "Change conversion settings" as well as some of the "Styles" checkboxes. Again, these just affected what gets bookmarked for the "Bookmarks" tab in the pdf version not whether a bookmark created in the Word document gets converted in the pdf format.

Is that a completely different question? I think it is. You
absolutely cannot stop this necessary warning on File links.

Getting links from Word to PDF is a question of using the right method
of PDF creation. Do NOT: print to a printer driver. DO: use a button
    or menu in Word.
