Adobe Acrobat 5.0.5. When 'save as' used for either RTF or TXT, the spacing for w o r d s changes w/xtra space placed into each and every word!

Hmm, sounds like you have had better luck than me on converting. If that was my only problem...
Well, that doesn't help you at all does it?

I do not have the problem. It may be that the extra space was part of the original doent.

Extra spaces are not part of the word. However, have a feeling the font used is causing the confusion. This doent was typed in 1988, and the professor used Letter Gothic, 10 pt. Curiously, some words actually convert correctly.

Sigh. Am NOT going to retype 255 pages. There's got to be an easier way

The PDF was made in 1988?

do you have the original doent still (pre-pdf)
if not redistill the pdf you have by printing the pdf to the distiller printer. Use the press job options.

The doent was created in 1988, and we have only the original typed. The original file no longer exists. The doent was then scanned into PDF format. Converting it to text was to allow changes.

Which application was used to do the OCR of the scan?

It was scanned through an IKON copier into PDF format -- not TIF.

I'd still try to re-distill the pdf and try to save the re-distilled pdf as rtf.

When you use the touchup text tool on the PDF there are no extra spaces in the text?

    Tried redistilling -- didn't work.

Touchup text -- extra spaces do not exist. Only when trying to save doent to RTF or TXT

Do you have a copy of the PDF we can look at?

If you can't host it and it's not huge (under 1MB) you can email it to me and I'll host it.

Sandra emailed me the PDf and RTF files.

When I opened the PDF in Acrobat 6 Pro and did a "Save As" RTF it came out correct.

Sandra, you might try downloading the 6.0 Pro trial and see if it works for you. Might be worth $150 to get all those books done.

W.T. The 6.0 trial did, in fact, work; the order to purchase the software is on the way to purchasing.

    Thanks for your help
