Try throwing away the Microsoft folder in Preferences. m.

Tossed MS prefs folder. New one was generated as expected when I opened
Word. Thid did not correct the problem. In fact I now no longer have to
look at the Font menu to lose the Tools menu items. Tools shows the font
list immediately on opening a new Word doc.

What happens if you throw away your Normal template? Menus in Word are
completely customizable, and this is where information about your
customization is stored. If you throw it away, the menu might revert to
    the default. m.
