write text files from shockwave movie?
Hello,
I wonder if its possible that a shockwave movie writes temporary textfiles
on the hard disk. Or is it just like I think it is, namely that it's
encapsulated within the browser's shockwave-plugin and therefore has no
right to do so?!
Thank you for any hint.

search for setPref and getPref in your help files.

Re: write text files from shockwave movie?
Hello,
thank you for your answer.
I've done this now and it seems that it could be a possibility for what I
want to do. But I have one more question. In the help files it says that
those text files will be created in a folder named "Prefs" within the
plugin folder of my web browser. Now I have been desperately searching for
this folder and also the textfile name I gave as a parameter. I can't find
it anywhere on my computer. I turned off "hide invisible files/folders"
etc. and also looked for it in the personal profile ("documents and
settings" / "my files" folders). WTF???? Where is this folder???
I have to know if such text files are stored within the user's system
profile ("Documents and Settings" / "My Files") or not.
Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Re: write text files from shockwave movie?
That's the point. I've already done this. When I said I've been searching
for it I meant I used the Find function of Windows. That's why I'm
wondering where it is. Does anyone know where these files SHOULD be
located?!

testing in. Of course, if you've never issued a setPref command or visited
a site that issues a setPref command, you won't find that folder anywhere.
FYI, running in a browser on this Win2K system, the path is
[drive]:\WINNT\system32\Macromed\Shockwave 8\Prefs
In authoring mode it lands in
[drive]:\Program Files\Macromedia\Director 8.5\Prefs
The nice thing about it is that you don't have to know the path at all,
Shockwave does it all for you.

Administrator priveleges. You may want to test with restricted users to
determine where the folder is created - again on various operating systems.
