There's a preference setting in Freehand to do that (a little box pops
up next to the fonts list if my memory is correct. I keep that one
    turned off.)

I have a somewhat related question about the font menu in Freehand 10 and
Suitcase 10...Does anyone know of a software solution to show typefaces nested
in "family" submenus? ATM used to do this in it's iteration of
    "Type-Reunion"...anybody know a solution?

I have checked the Freehand 10 preference and can not find a setting
    for the font display.
    I appreciate your reply

I haven't been totally happy with either product but here are two you can try out:

We never had Freehand 10 but the preference was the same in 9 and MX. Open up the Freehand preferences, click on 'Text' and make sure the box next to 'Display Font Preview' is checked.
