Ximian Evolution (NOW WORKING on Sparc 9 - v8/03)!!! - Sun Solaris

Default Ximian Evolution (NOW WORKING on Sparc 9 - v8/03)!!!

You may have seen my previous messages about Ximian Evolution not working
    on my SparcStation.

Having followed the instructions to compile the uname.so and alter the
download, I had managed to download. At first it appeared to work (I could
see the weather on the front page, and could send e-mail; but it regularly
crashed if I tried to view my mailbox, calendar or tasks. I got really fed
    up with things.

Yesterday I was following a totally different thread on this NG about
setting the default colour depth of my framebuffer. You see, with this
version of Solaris it seems to default to 8 bit, not more (although it
seems Mozilla switches the display to 24 bit when it loads). The way
Solaris had installed, the screen looked poor and none of the gnome games
displaid anything for me to play :-(

Anyway, long story cut short, setting the default depth to 24 in
/etc/dt/config/Xservers not only made the screen look better but XIMIAN
EVOLUTION NOW WORKS!! No crash when I opened my Inbox!

Hey, try to fix one thing and you fix another at the same time -- I'm now
going out to buy a lottery ticket as it seems to be my lucky day.

Thats why my installation was working then.
The Xsun Defdepth 24 thing is one of the first mods I always do
    on a new workstation Install.

Ah. It's the first I had ever seen that it was necessary.

If you run CDE as window manager it you can run 8 bit color.
If you run GNOME or KDE, 8 bit color is ugly and grainy and you
    have too many palette flashes.

Well, is this not incredible! I had also given up on Evolution. However,
I recently setup a Solaris 9 x86 box and set the depth to 24. It made my
Ultra-60 look sick, to the point that I started researching what I needed
to do to make the Ultra-60 look as clear as the x86 box. It had not
dawned on me that I was using the wrong color depth and sure enough, I am
    using 8-bit color. No wonder.

Now I am back to trying to get Evolution to work. I had gotten to the
same point of the nice screen with the weather, etc. Opening the inbox
crashed and most everything else did too.

Thanks very much for posting this Andy!

A quick followup to my previous post Andy. I set defclass TrueColor and
defdepth 24 and switched the resolution from 1280x1024x60 to 1280x1024x76
and my Ultra-60 now looks great!

Evolution is now allowing me to do something other than look at the
    weather.

    Thanks again, Alex Moore

    Amazing how something so small could have caused us so much frustration;
    and be fixed so easily.

Glad to hear you're there now.
