Johan,
InDesign's XML table model is very simple. It doesn't support things like merged cells or table styling attributes. I'm hopeful that in future versions of InDesign there will be a more robust XML table model. Until then, if you want to import pre-styled tables you'd be better off using InDesign Tagged Text. Another approach you might consider is to automate the styling of the table after import. There is a commercial plug-in called Smart Styles (Woodwing software) that does this or it can be done with a script.
