xp updates - Windows Setup, Administration & Security

Don't get me wrong I love using Windows XP, but the thing that es me off is all these security updates, for gods sake how many security breaches are there every day its one or 2 updates and I have xp with sp1 installed. I wonder why microsoft would release an OS such as XP pro if it has so many security issues, maybe I should take a look at linux I hear it is very secure....

    Ed;
Windows XP is pretty secure as long as you keep up with the updates.
    Linux is the same.
As more and more go to Linux, more people will get an interest in
    exploiting it as well.
Some of the patches fix newly discovered vulnerabilities.
Others fix issues caused simply by technological advances.
It would be virtually impossible for any OS to be released and to
instantly be secure from known and unknown threats in the future.

The bright side is that there are security updates to keep your
    computer secure.

    Default XP updates

I have 27 critical updates that I am trying to download.
The download box appears and fills up ok.
The install box never fills up no matter how long I wait.
    What am I doing wrong?

I have XP on a Toshiba 1955-5805. Do you have an update
that you can send me, via snail mail, on disc that will
negate the latest worms and viruses??

I'm writing this note on a Mac computer because I am afraid
to get on the internet with my windows based computer.

    Glenn,

On your Toshiba laptop, you can disable the automatic shutdown by doing the
    following:

As soon as your computer reboots and Windows loads, click Start, then Run.
In the box, type the following:

    shutdown -a (then click OK)

This should buy you time to get your fixes and updates installed.

Here is an excellent site with detailed instructions and links to patches:
