xp_cmdShell 'dir s:\backup' Access Denied - Microsoft SQL / MS SQL Server

Any assistance w/xp_cmdShell would be appreciated. I'm reluctant to start changing any logins before I have a better understanding of what login/element to change. I'm getting Access Denied when I'm trying test running a simple DIR command. S:\ is a mapped drive on another MSSQL Server. I'm trying to copy over the last backup and then I'll hopfully run a DTS package to restore the backup. I'm suspecting that this has to do with permissions. I ran this using both the sa login and password and using NT authentication with the same result. I also tried using the same string ...

Default xp_cmdShell 'dir s:\backup' Access Denied

Any assistance w/xp_cmdShell would be appreciated. I'm reluctant to start
changing any logins before I have a better understanding of what login/element
    to change.

I'm getting Access Denied when I'm trying test running a simple DIR command.

S:\ is a mapped drive on another MSSQL Server. I'm trying to copy over the last
backup and then I'll hopfully run a DTS package to restore the backup.

I'm suspecting that this has to do with permissions.

I ran this using both the sa login and password and using NT authentication with
    the same result.

I also tried using the same string I had in the Explorer and received the same
    msg.

    TIA

    JeffP....

The problem is permissions related. Make sure that the account sqlserver
runs under has read permissions to that share. If you use LocalSystem
account, you might need to change it to a domain account with proper
permissions (a DomainAdmins global group member preferably)
