Yikes. New MT-Newswatcher icons just showed up - Mac Networking

After years of looking at the same icons, tonight all my MT-Newswatcher files showed up with brand new icons that I've never seen before. I didn't do ANYTHING different on my system. Pismo running Panther. This is weird. The only installs today were the new Windows Media Player for OSX, and the Java 1.4 update from the Apple Software Update preference. What happened?...

Any chance you added the .news file extension to your MT-NewsWatcher
files? This always updated the icon for me.

I have years old NW and MT-NW settings file which has showed the correct
    icon in Mac OS 8-9-10.1-10.2.

Now I copied it to a Mac running 10.3 and the icon is blank. It correctly
launches MT-NW, though (the latest beta which AFAIR is 3.1b1 or something
    like that).

How can I do the Mac OS X equivalent of dektop rebuild? Or do I just have
to add .news suffix to the file? Why does this manifest in 10.3 but not
    in 10.2 (I previously had the latest non-beta MT-NW in 10.2 -- does the
    latest beta behave differently?).

Just add the .news suffix to the file.

I don't know why, but perhaps Panther pays more attention to the suffix
than to file type and creator.

I've seen various apps and files spontaneously change their icons in OS
    X. I thought it happened in all versions, but it could be it just showed
up in 10.3 and my memory is faulty.

Anyway, I find a simple logout/login fixes it.

I guess it has something to do with a temporarily corrupted icon cache
    or something?

    It's a bug in Panther's Finder. I see it regularly. There's nothing
wrong with the files themselves, just the icons Finder is displaying for
    them.
