Default Zoom/ hand move toggle issues, windows xp

I have a copy of Indesign CS on windows Xp pro. The problem I'm having is whenever I select the zoom tool, move the cursor over to the canvas, hold the space bar, it shows the hand, i want to be able to move the canvas around by doing so, but as soon as I click and drag the mouse, (still holding the spacebar down), it switches over to the zoom tool, draws a rectangle (zoom selection) and zooms in.

I know this has to be somekind of glitch because I'm able to do this fine in photoshop. Can anyone help?

Might I suggest to make a habit of never clicking on the zoom tool. To invoke zoom temporarily, hold down ctrl and spacebar and drag with the mouse to zoom in close. To pan, as you said above, hold down only the spacebar (unless in type tool in text, in which case use the alt key) and drag to pan.

IOW, stay mostly in the black Selection tool, or the white Direct Selection tool, or in the Type tool and never click to the zoom tool to zoom. Stay in the three most frequently used tools.

    Hope this helps,

I really appreciate the alternative, I re-installed Indesign, and found it doesnt do this. Other than that, I usually delete the preference file, and let it re-write a fresh one. It wasn't helping, so I reinstalled it. Thanks for the help.
