VirtueMart is a free shopping cart plugin available for both Joomla! and Mambo. VirtueMart is an open source, e-commerce application that can be run either as a shopping cart or in catalog mode. VirtueMart is written in PHP format so it is fully compatible to Joomla!. Just like Joomla!, VirtueMart can be modified and customized as well.

VirtueMart is a complete shopping cart solution that can also be run as a catalog. One of the most attractive features of this powerful application is its capacity to handle numerous categories, products, customers and shipping modules. You can also sell goods such as mp3 files, software and videos.

Installing VirtueMart is not a complicated process and involves a simple and straightforward steps. Let’s do it now.

Step 1: First you will need to download the full VirtueMart package which is available at their official site. After the package is saved to your hard drive, you can begin the installation process.

Step 2: Next you will install the core component of VirtueMart . Log in to your Joomla administrator page, you need to click Installers and then the Components button on the drop-down menu. Click on the browse button  and select the component file com VirtueMart.x.x.tar.gz. Click the button to Upload File and Install. The core element is now installed to your Joomla server and now you have to install the module in order to be able to access the VirtueMart shopping cart.

Step 3: After that you will install the VirtueMart module  that will give you access to the VirtueMart shopping cart. Click the Installers link. Select Modules from the drop-down menu.

Step 4: Click on the Browse button  to select the module file found in the installation package. The filename is Virtuemart.x.x.tar.gz . After you have selected the appropriate file, click Upload File and Install. Your Joomla website now has VirtueMart installed. The VirtueMart component is now ready for use.

Step 5: Now click on the Components link on your administrator’s home page. You will find that the Virtuemart option is now available on the dropdown menu. Click on that link. Next, click on the option to Go directly to Store.  The final installation step should be initialize. This step may take a while and it is very important that you do not interrupt this step. Once the process is complete, the virtuemart components should be fully accessible and you will be ready to start adding and selling products on your new e-commerce add-on.
