I have been using Windows Seven Beta for last three days and I have thoroughly enjoyed working on it and playing with its awesome taskbar. I wanted to have the first hand experience so I installed it natively on hard disk instead of trying it using VMWare or other Virtualization softwares.

The installation was pretty smooth and I think Windows has really worked hard in keeping the installation time as less as possible. The installation took me around 25 minutes and I would even go as far to say that it was by far the best installation of any Operating System and that includes Linux Ubuntu. This is bound to cause some sensation amongst the Ubuntu users but guys, Windows has always been ruthless against its competition and Windows Seven seems like Microsoft’s arsenal to thwart the increasing competition.

Although people usually seek information on transforming their Windows XP desktop into a Windows Vista machine but my habit going against the flow sort of nudged me to transform my Vista desktop into an XP machine. I just wanted my Vista to look like Windows XP just for the sake of it. After a little searching here and there I could find some adequate tools to do that.

This is the desktop I have created in my last half an hour of screwing up with Rainmeter, Rocketdock, Windows XP visual style and icons along with some more customizations of varied degrees. I recommend you to click on the image to get a higher resolution image of the same.

There are so many themes for Windows XP but for some reason finding the best ones is not very easy. The boring default Windows XP theme is just that…boring and no matter what if you want your Windows system to look good visually and aesthetically, getting a new theme is the best thing you should do after installing Windows XP.
Most of the visual styles made for XP do not resonate natively and thus picking the one which suits best to your eyes along with wallpaper is not that easy as it sounds. I did some spooking here and there in my hard disk where I had downloaded some of the Windows XP themes so that I can share the best of all with you.
Windows Royale is the only official theme for Windows XP other than the default one which comes preinstalled. This is also by fat the best theme because of its no nonsense design and visual style. The glossy blue adds some visual energy into the desktop.

First things first, I use Windows XP (also use Ubuntu) which means that I won’t be saying a lot about customizing Windows Vista because most of the applications that work on XP works on Vista as well. World might have adopted Vista but I am happy with XP and I keep experimenting and customizing my system primarily to keep it appear kick-ass and secondarily to outshine the systems of my peers.
There are quite a lot of applications to change the way your Windows system looks but following are some of the applications which I use quite regularly along with ones which have launched in the year 2008.
Winstep Xtreme is perhaps the best thing that has ever happened in the niche of user-interface and visual style to the Windows Operating Systems like Windows XP, 2000 and Windows Vista. It completely transforms your system and adds a unique raw appeal to it. This software makes your system appear like one of those machines you see in Hollywood Sci-Fi movies. It adds a dock on the top along with a Clock, CPU meter and Weather widgets. It also adds a tabbed dock which makes reaching any place or starting an application be it Control Panel, Movies folder, System Information quite easy and intuitive. I particularly liked the sound effects you hear when you move your cursor over its dock seated just above the Windows taskbar. This has to be the the best eye candy software ever made for general users because unlike others you don’t need to download and configure some skins and stuff in order to get an enviable desktop.

No matter how much Linux has become user-friendly and Windows Vista has put on lipstick, Windows XP is still the most reliable and user-friendly operating system. Since designers and developers need to use many high RAM consuming applications like Photoshop, so it’s wise to use Windows XP which doesn’t waste CPU on unwanted visual effects.
Since Windows XP is no longer officially available so you will have tough time installing Windows XP on your new laptop like I did. I recently bought Dell Inspiron and I lost quite a lot of my hair while trying to install Win XP in it.
You will face problems while configuring the system as well because many computer manufacturers do not provide Windows XP drivers now. So if you have bought a new machine and are planning to downgrade to Windows XP from Windows Vista then you beware of the challenges. Read the rest of this entry »
