Bubbl.us is a free online web application which you should seriously consider for mind mapping and brain storming. You can use it without having to sign up while you may also export the created mindmap in XML, HTML and needless to say image too. Mind42 is a similar service which gets arranged in a tree like diagram to show and manage connections between ideas. It is also a browser based online application. Creating mind maps on Mind42 is like creating diagrams on whiteboard which to me seems pretty neat.

XMind is an open source, social brainstorming and mind mapping tool which unlike some other applications mentioned in this list is not browser based. You need to download XMind and install it in order to use it. It was earlier a commercial software which is now also available in an open source version.

FreeMind as the name suggests is a free mind mapping application which offers lot of export format options including XHTML, SVG, PNG and PDF. It is one of the best open source desktop application for brainstorming.
