If you are even remotely like me then you must be using multiple computers to perform your work and the daily dose of video gaming. I tend to shuffle between three machines to do my work and thus I try to seek an uniformity in all the desktops. It is quite a challenge to synchronize certain files between all the machines I use and thus I need a solid synchronization and backup solution. I tend to use some applications which might help you guys as well in keeping a copy of your most used files and folders across all your machines.
Live Mesh is a new service from the notorious Microsoft which makes a backup of the user-selected files and folders on their servers. I am obviously assuming that you wouldn’t mind Microsoft keeping your data. The files which you have put in the mesh are copied/ to the other computers when they come online using a Live Mesh software which you need to install in all your machines with which you want to synchronize data. Any change in the file by means of addition or removal is updated across all the machines.
You can however also use those files from your web browser. In spite of the Microsoft’s long established trend, you can use Live Mesh on your Firefox web browser and Macs as well. Oh yeah did I also tell you that you can also use Live Mesh on your Windows enabled mobile devices. Live Mesh certainly is very promising and it also won Crunchies Best Technology Innovation award this year.
Foxmarks does the job of synchronizing your bookmarks and passwords on Mozilla Firefox. It started its journey with synchronizing bookmarks and I have been using and loving this Firefox extension for a long time. Recently it has also started to synchronize your passwords which I have not opted to use as of yet. This Firefox extension helps me to keep the track of websites I have starred on any given days with that star thingy. Further I also use another Firefox extension called Read It Later which although has its own synchronization feature but if you have Foxmarks installed on your Firefox then you don’t really need to take care of that. Since all the links I have added to Read It Later are automatically saved in a bookmark folder by the same name so Foxamarks also synchronize it along with other bookmarks you have added. You can also see all your saved bookmarks online without any need of Firefox extension.
Evernote is another application which is a note-taking application with synchronizing abilities. Its an applications which has grown a lot since its launch sometime back. You can be a nice word processor for you and it can also help you to organize information in a way that is less messy. You can use it across multiple Windows and Mac computers. I use it mainly to write down some information that I want to recall to mysellf later on and its clipping tool to take the screenshot of any part on your desktop is also brilliant. You gotta try this if you are not using Microsoft One note.
The above mentioned applications and extensions have been helping me to maintain some sanity while working or playing across multiple computers. Do you also use more than one machines? What are the softwares and applications you use? Do tell us in Comments.
